Umm Salal (Arabic: أم صلال) is a municipality in the State of Qatar, known for its historical landmarks. It is also an A13 class containership, now deployed by UASC in its AMC1 string linking Asia with Italy.
M/V Umm Salal is the first 13,296 TEUs ship to be deployed by UASC in the Asia – Mediterranean trades and is the largest UASC ship to date in calling at Italian ports. La Spezia Container Terminal is honored to be the first Italian container terminal to receive this latest 158,000 GRT behemoth.
The ship arrived at LSCT on August 8th, with up to five cranes being available to be deployed. During the operations, LSCT personnel presented the now time honored crest in recognition of the maiden call to Capt. Ahmed Hamza Shehata and his crew.
Michael Cashman, Commercial Director, Broström Tankers AB, with specific responsibilities for customer relationships with UASC comments: ”LSCT welcomes this latest ULCC deployed by one of our most important customers here in La Spezia. The infrastructure improvements that have and are being put in place enable the terminal to take these events in its stride. We have the cranes, berth and water depths to successfully operate these size of ships and we thank UASC for having the confidence in La Spezia to be able to operate them, with a UASC triple first:
- First 13,000 TEUs ship deployed in the Asia – Mediterranean Trade
- First 13,000 TEUs ship to call in Italian Ports
- First 13,000 TEUs ship to call in La Spezia Container Terminal
We look forward to operating the next larger ship to be deployed in this string…”
