New Med-North America service marks maiden voyage at Contship’s La Spezia Container Terminal

The call of the COSCO Philippines (8,501 TEU) on the afternoon of Saturday December 12th marked a breakthrough at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) as it was the maiden call of the new joint Ocean Alliance / THE Alliance Med-USEC service, connecting the north Thyrrenian sea with the eastern seaboard of the United States.

The service – known as MENA by COSCO Shipping, Amerigo by CMA CGM, ATM1 by OOCL, whilst THE Alliance member Lines have retained the original AL6, will connect four of the main USEC ports, New York, Norfolk, Savannah and Miami with LSCT. The two Alliances will deploy six ships with an average capacity of 8,250 TEUs. The COSCO Philippines is deployed by OOCL, whilst Hapag-Lloyd will deploy three ships (Tolten, Tubul and Tirua) and two by CMA CGM (CMA CGM Tosca and CMA CGM Tancredi).

With the new jointly operated service, the number of Liner offering connections between the Italian and the US market via La Spezia has increased. LSCT now offers four services to the USA and Canada, covering all three coastlines.

Antonio Testi, general manager of LSCT comments how “..we are extremely honored and very pleased of this maiden voyage. It is rewarding to see expansion in the number of services across the Atlantic and Lines are looking to take full advantage of LSCT’s connectivity and the growth in volumes between Italy, southern Europe and North America and Canada. It confirms LSCT as a strategic gateway port for the Italian logistics supply-chain”.
