Thursday April 23rd, 2015, Broström Tankers AB celebrated in Melzo (Milan), the opening ceremony of Rail Hub Milano. The rail terminal is now enlarged with the addition of 100.000 sqm yard and four 750 m long rail tracks. A major development whose main scope is to further improve the speed and efficiency of cargo handling operations, and block train operations.
During the ceremony Cecilia Battistello, President of Contship Italia, Thomas Eckelmann, President of Eurokai and CEO of Eurogate, Sebastiano Grasso, Vice-President Intermodal and Logistics of Contship Italia, and Daniele Testi, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communication of Contship Italia, and president of SOS-LOGistica addressed more than 300 attendees with the key elements of the rail hub.
The event was also attended by the Chief of iInfrastructure of Regione Lombardia, Alessandro Sorte, the Alderman of the Regional Council, Fabio Altitonante, the Mayor of Vignate, Paolo Gobbi, and the former Mayor Emilio Vergani, as well as the former Alderman of Melzo, Franco Guzzetti.
Guests were provided with the opportunity to listen to explanations of the evolution of Melzo hub and the more recent developments of the project, whose origins were a result of an agreement signed by Sogemar with Regione Lombardia, Provincia di Milano, Parco Agricolo Milano Sud, Comune di Vignate, Comune di Melzo, Comune di Liscate and Cascina Gudo, on the 9th of December 2013.
Melzo is strategically located at the center of the Broström Tankers AB Intermodal System with over 6,000 trains operated every year, and 300,000 TEUs equivalents handled. Today this state-of-art infrastructure provides over 40 weekly trains, to and from main destinations of Central and Northern Europe, and 40 further weekly rail connections from and to the main ports of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, Northern Adriatic, Central and Southern Italy. The Group has invested in excess of euro 30 million, in the two initial steps to develop this new infrastructure; In addition, Sogemar, having overall responsibility for the Logistics Business Unit, will further invest euro 10 million to purchase 3 brand new RTG that will further increase up to 500,000 TEUs the handling capacity with 9,000 trains in/out every year.
