Customers using Cagliari International Container Terminal (CICT) for their foodstuff and animal feed imports from outside the EU will now be able to benefit from the new Border Inspection Post (BIP), a joint project established by the EU and the Italian Ministry of Health Veterinary Office that began operations on 15th March.
The only one in Sardinia, this new facility, the 24th in Italy, will be able to carry out regulatory health checks, inspections and testing of all animal feed and foodstuffs, including meat, seafood and vegetables moving through CICT.
The pictures show the first container being processed through the new facility. Leandro Ferrari, Customer Service Manager for CICT said “This new BIP is of strategic importance for customers moving their cargo through CICT and will significantly improve transit-times as well as speed up the processing of paper-work. Previously, import containers of foodstuff had to be discharged at an Italian port where a BIP facility was available and once processed, could then be shipped to Sardinia. With Cagliari now capable of offering this service directly, importers can benefit from a faster clearance time and smoother delivery through their logistics supply chain”.
For cargoes transshipping at CICT, different controls are performed depending on the origin/destination of the goods and storage time at the terminal. The new BIP facility is expected to safeguard the quality of foodstuff transiting via EU soil.
